I rented a van yesterday to pick up a couple bookcases I found on Craigslist.  I called the local Uhaul to confirm what they had in stock, and the representative on the phone was barely 20 seconds into the process when his voice changed dramatically, and he asked me to hold. The line wasn't muted, so I could here hear what initially sounded like maybe a sneeze building. But an extended sniffling continued, along with what next sounded like panting, or even more so like sobbing. Some muffled, anguished communication was shared with another employee. Ah, god, no!... she replied from a nearby counter as the sobbing sounds continued. Damn, she continued, Everyone going through something this week... I heard her trail off. 

A minute later he was back on the line and re-engaged. Sorry for the wait, he said, like nothing happened. It felt intrusive to ask about his problems, but I checked in, clumsily: Is.. everything..OK??  I could hear him back at the keyboard. Oh yeah, All good. A mosquito flew up my nose - AGAIN - but I wasn't gonna let THIS one die up there... Will you be needing a van or a truck?


I sat down at my computer with the intention of thanking everyone for coming out to the amazing Urelio's Pizza event in the back lot Saturday. Or to tell you to SAVE THE DATE for our 8 Year Anniversary Party on November 9th! Or maybe just to let you know about our flights tonight, and about Peter Andrews of CULTURE WINE CO. pouring South African wines this Saturday! But now I'm thinking about the boxes of books that I need to unpack to fill these empty bookcases - and thinking about a lost mosquito who just may have survived the mucus membranes of a sensitive Uhaul service agent, perhaps only momentarily.
