After a week of rest and relaxation, followed by a week of work and isolation, I’ve begun to make plans to reemerge. My partner and social director is traveling, and our home is as oddly still as those of our friends whose teenagers have just flown the coop. I forget how disorienting September can be, as we revisit our obligations and intentions after the lull of late summer. And I feel disconnected from my people. They’ve been in far-off places, then to a wedding somewhere, then bed-ridden, stricken by the newest edition of our perennial affliction, and now they’re out of sight, drafting austerity measures, knuckling down, and preparing to launch this year’s marble.
So I’m calling them up and calling them out, to a dinner here and a coffee there, to reconnect and examine life’s complexities together, with many eyes, the only way to rightly see. I’m thirsty for their observations and reservations, their stories, worries, and laughter, and tired of my own, as one grows tired of their go-to salad dressing. “What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you, but I know it's mine.” I find some things in life too difficult to digest on one’s own, too tough to get my head around, or impossible to hold or even handle, without some trusted help. Lean on your friends; get out and see your people; invite them for a walk or a lunch or a tasting flight at Oakland Yard, the optimal place to collectively ruminate, address the problems of the world and appreciate its wonderment. In addition to our daily wines by the glass, we’ve got several events planned this week that are bound to be joyous and lively, including rosé tasting flights Saturday and Urelio’s Pizza this Sunday. Come on by and bring a friend!
