For anyone curious, I'll be a pirate tonight. My kids have been insisting on it, for reasons unknown. They told mom to be a "disco bat", we'll see how that turns out. Our little one is going to be a black cat and her sister a witch. I overheard the older one discussing costumes with her classmates at drop off yesterday, other kids sharing their visions and possibilities. "I'm gonna be a fart", one of the boys proclaimed.

But it's another night of trick-or-treating for many, some off to costume parties, or others hosting movie nights, eerie music and screams emanating from TVs all evening. The loudest scream I think I ever heard was one Halloween in 6th grade, trick-or-treating in my friend's neighborhood. We stopped in at what we thought was the home of another kid from school but had the wrong address. He said they'd have the lights off since they weren't passing out candy and that we should let ourselves in around back. But it wasn't the right home, and his elderly neighbor turned on the lights in her rear kitchen to discover us entering... her shriek scared us (for years) maybe more than we startled her. Even at our height, my friend's Jason Voorhees mask and accessories were probably alarming (though in hindsight it's possible she found my Michael Jackson getup equally frightening).
